There must be something in the Nordic and Scandinavian water that brings out a perfect mix of soul, dance and chill. Hailing from Norway, Gundelach encompasses all of this. I was introduced to Gundelach through radio play of the single ‘Garden’ on BBC Radion 1’s Chillest Show with Phil Taggart. ‘Garden’ is an outstanding 80’s influenced dance tune with soulful male vocals and an 80’s guitar solo to boot. Only a matter of weeks later he released his debut album ‘Baltus’, sounding like an accompanying soundtrack to a make believe sequel to the movie ‘Drive’. Gundelach’s soulful falsetto vocals grab you and calm you, yet you can feel the dance undercurrent throughout tracks including ‘Control’, and 80’s synth vibe track ‘Games’ featuring the female vocals by Ary, hits you like a sped up melody by The XX.
‘Baltus’ doesn’t quite reach the high’s promised by the single ‘Garden’, but it still gives you that hit of that Nordic vibe.
