Loyle Carner Yesterdays Gone

It’s 9.30pm, the kids are sound asleep, you have finished eating, washing up and all the stuff you have to do as a parent, it is now your time to shine, or maybe just to put your feet up and muster up whatever little energy you have left to just unwind…it’s time to relax and zone-out to the cool, rap, jazz, soul, soothing vocals of London’s Loyle Carner. Now I know that I might be late to the game listening to Loyle’s 2017 album, but that is exactly what this blog is about! My proper introduction to his music came through his current single ‘Ottolenghi’ which is a magnificiently lyrical track, referencing a recipe book ‘Jerusalem’ by the acclaimed chef Yotam Ottolenghi.

‘Yesterday’s Gone’ places so much emphasis on the family, even featuring his mum, it is like a hip-hop hug, offering charm throughout all the tracks, with old-skool rap hat tips.

Stand out tracks include the rockier ‘No CD (feat. Rebel Kieff)’, ‘Damselfly (feat. Tom Misch)’, ‘Ain’t Nothing Changed’ and choral powerful album opener ‘The Isle of Arran’.

Carner’s lyrics demonstrate charm, wit, flair and young wisdom.
