The 1975 are an enigma, a band that I was undecided on, where do they fit into my music world? Maybe they are reminiscent of the pop / rock sounds of the 1980’s, the music of a once written off bygone era. I was wrong.
‘A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships’ is the Manchester / Cheshire four piece’s 3rd album. With this they have by definition created an eclectic sound, born out of the diverse tastes of the ‘iPod shuffle’ generation. Prior to the arrival of the MP3, a band would be defined by their genre specific sound and their committed fanbase influenced by that sound. Dare I say it, the ideas behind this album remind me of ‘Ok Computer’, shhhhh don’t tell my peers that I wrote that…
Let me explain, with this album, The 1975 will transport themselves to the elevated heights of a creative super band. Get ready for the new festival headliners.
In lead singer, Matt Healy, they have a front man with charisma and depth. His vocals and the music flit from stadium filler’s ‘Love it If We Made It’ & ‘I Like America & America Likes Me’, to choral ‘Sincerity Is Scary’, hotel lobby jazz ‘Mine’, 80’s style love anthem ‘I Couldn’t Be In More Love’, all mixed in together with social media and internet commentary track ‘The Man Who Married A Robot / Love Theme’ and deep dance ‘How To Draw / Petrichor’, the list goes on…hence why this album is so complex to define.
This is a musical creation of the present, an album that deserves a repeat listen, just like you said that you used to do.
